Apollo-8 en décembre 1968 à Apollo-17 en décembre 1972, l’humanité écrivait, grâce à la National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA), l’une des plus belles pages de son histoire : la première exploration humaine du satellite naturel de la Terre. Les Golden Sixties ont été la décennie prodigieuse de l’astronautique. L’apothéose était marquée par l’arrivée de quatre Américains sur la Lune au cours de l’année 1969. Huit autres astronautes allaient les imiter en 1971 et 1972.
