The Léon Fredericq Foundation allocates 1,341,000 euros to medical research

The Léon Fredericq Fund - a university hospital foundation created by the University of Liège and the University Hospital - has just awarded 1,341,000 euros in favour of medical research and the fight against cancer during its ceremony for the award of scholarships and prizes for 2020. A record amount that will make it possible to finance 148 research projects defended by 142 researchers from the University of Liège (GIGA, Santé publique, épidémiologie et économie de la Santé, CIRM, MolSys and FARAH) and the University Hospital of Liège (CHU).

Created on the 18 October 2017 by the University of Liège, the University Hospital of Liège, the Léon Fredericq Fund and the Anti-Cancer Centre, the Léon Fredericq Foundation aims to strengthen support for medical and biomedical research in Liège in all fields of medicine, but also to support innovative projects carried out by the University Hospital of Liège both for the well-being of patients and for the quality of care. The Foundation is actively involved in the fight against cancer by working alongside the new Cancer Institute of the University Hospital of Liège, a medical reference centre in Wallonia in the field of Oncology.

On the 13 November 2019, at its annual awards ceremony, the Léon Frédéricq Foundation awarded 148 grants  for 2020 that will enable 142 researchers  - many of them from the GIGA Research Centre - to finance their research projects. The record amount of €1,341,000 raised this year will be distributed in the form of grants, travel grants, operating grants, clinical research grants and specific prizes.

Distribution of the subventions for the year 2020

  • 8 Travel grants for a total amount of €60,000
  • 6 Clinical Research Grants for a total amount of 40,000€
  • 61 Flat-rate operating loans FNRS-FRIA-Télévie for a total amount of €305,000
  • 36 operating and equipment grants for a total amount of €252,000
  • 22 Scholarships and specific prizes for a total amount of €394,000
  • 2 "Euroma Fund" subsidies for a total amount of 140,000€.
  • 2 subsidies in favour of Innovative Projects for the benefit of the patient for a total amount of 75,000€.
  • 11 Scholarships and Prizes from associated Foundations for a total amount of 75,000€.
