ULiège is a partner in two MSCA Doctoral network projects

In Research Projet de recherche

The University of Liège participates in two projects MSCA Doctoral Network, a funding tool for doctoral networks whose objective is to implement doctoral programs through partnerships of organizations from different sectors, in Europe and beyond, in order to train highly qualified researchers, to stimulate their creativity, to reinforce their innovation capacities and to improve their long-term employability. TAME and Rebone will be supervised by researchers from the Faculty of Medicine (GIGA CRC In vivo Imaging and InBios) and the School of engineering  (Aerospace & Mechanical engineering) of the University of Liege.

TAME - Doctoral training network TAu imMunE: strategies for innovative diagnosis and therapies in dementia

There is an urgent medical need for efficient diagnostics for Alzheimer’s disease and related tauopathies, as well as disease-modifying treatments, due to the heavy burden of the disease on patients, families and society. To address this public health issue, TAME R&I training network gathers leading academic and industrial experts in tau research with the ambition to keep older people active and independent for longer. TAME aims to provide a better understanding of tau-related diseases and supports the development of new, safer, personalised and more effective diagnoses and interventions for AD and the less common tauopathies. The beneficiaries and partners bring together resources and knowledge across different fields and technologies to provide a multidisciplinary approach necessary to take on the challenge. They have teamed up to combine molecular and cellular neuroscience with computing, chemical and bio-engineering and their technical expertise. The first tau network of Europe, TAME, will focus on novel approaches using nanobodies, which have emerged as very promising antibody formats in tau research. The primary objective of the TAME is to train 9 fellows to deliver the next generation of talented life scientists. The program will be a combination of training in research, personal and professional development and in open science, achieved by conducting research projects, attending courses and benefiting from internal mobility within TAME. The research training is based on cutting-edge technologies and advanced models for medical research, emphasizing the need for more human-based research, gender-personalised models and a reduction in the use of animals. Consequently, through intense collaboration with all partners and relevant industrial experience, these 9 fellows can anticipate improved career prospects and higher employability. TAME will provide an innovation-friendly framework in which scientific results can mature and be developed into products

REBONE - End-to-end multidisciplinary optimal design for improved personalized bioactive glass/ceramic bone substitute implants

The musculoskeletal system is extremely vulnerable to ageing and traumatic events, and common clinical conditions often exert a high burden on the clinical system. For patients requiring bone-substitute implants to treat critical-size bone defects, new solutions are required for meeting important unmet needs: personalised solutions for better clinical outcomes; improvements in materials to ensure higher mechanical reliability without compromising bioactive and bioresorbable properties; optimised manufacturing technologies for materials and products of high reliability and quality. REBONE is a four-year doctoral network that aims to innovatively train a new generation of researchers to develop a multidisciplinary optimisation process to provide technologies for 3D-printed personalised bone replacement implants based on bioactive ceramics. The ultimate scientific goal is to construct a platform of computational tools that will enable clinical experts to produce customized bone graft substitutes for the treatment of critical-size bone defects. This innovation will ensure that an ideal treatment solution is found on a patient-specific basis in terms of: i) mechanical and mechano-biological performance, ii) surgical implantability, and iii) manufacturing process reliability. Furthermore, REBONE will develop state-of-the-art in silico models based on advanced computational methods and advanced characterisation and validation techniques to obtain personalised implants with a surgical planning visualization system in mixed reality with the following characteristics: i) tailored and reliable mechanical and physical properties; ii) best osteointegration capability; iii) targeted mechanical, physical and mechano-biological functions with patient-specific constraints taking into account the load-bearing anatomical location. Four selected clinical cases will be used as demonstrators of the optimization design and manufacturing process.

About the MSCA Doctoral Network

The MSCA Doctoral Network are part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, a European Union reference program for doctoral education and postdoctoral training. These networks implement doctoral programs, through partnerships between universities, research institutions and infrastructures, companies, including SMEs, and other socio-economic actors from different countries in Europe and beyond. These doctoral programs will address well-identified needs in various fields of research and innovation, expose researchers to the academic and non-academic sectors, and provide research training and transferable skills and competencies useful for innovation and long-term employability.

Two types of doctoral networks. Industrial PhDs that train PhD students who wish to develop their skills and take the next step outside of academia, particularly in industry and business. Individual participants must be enrolled in a PhD program and be jointly supervised by academic and non-academic partners. Joint PhDs, which offer a highly integrated type of international, cross-sectoral and interdisciplinary collaboration in doctoral training leading to a joint PhD or multiple PhDs awarded by the participating institutions.
