A new building for the Faculty of Architecture in Outremeuse

Following an international architecture competition, ULiège has selected the project by Brussels office OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen for the design of a 3,600 square metre building to house the teaching (workshops), research and administrative activities of ULiège's Faculty of Architecture.

The building will be constructed at the heart of the Fonck Campus, where the Faculty of Architecture shares the site with the ESA Saint-Luc and the Manège de la Caserne Fonck, asserting its educational, creative and cultural identity, close to the new B3.

The project was presented at the opening of the Building Pedagogy exhibition (26 September - 26 October), which brings together the five finalists in the architecture competition.

According to Dean Pr Pierre Hallot, the new building will reconfigure the site by providing the extra space needed to accommodate the sharp rise in student numbers (which have doubled in five years), while also improving the flow of people between the Fonck Campus, the ESA Saint-Luc and the Manège.

Other developments, including an Aula linking Rue Ransonnet and the inner courtyard, will confirm the Faculty's role as a space open to the public and to cultural activities, close to the new B3.

As for the campus, it will be car-free, as the Faculty and the other occupants of the site want to set an example and take full advantage of the arrival of the tram (the Pont Maghin stop will be 300 metres away, on the other side of the Meuse).

Prof. Rudi Cloots, the Rector's Adviser on Infrastructure, explained that the new building represented an investment of 12 million Euros under ULiège's Infrastructure Plan, to which ULiège will add another 6 to 8 million for fitting out the Aula and other adaptations to existing buildings, making a total of almost 20 million invested over the next five years.

Planning permission for the new building is expected to be submitted by the end of the year, and construction is scheduled to start in 2025, with students and staff moving in from the start of the 2028 academic year.

The design of the new building is the result of close dialogue with the various occupants of the Fonck Campus. It is also intended to be a showcase and a project that encourages exchanges with teachers and architecture students throughout the process, like a life-size workshop.
