Geographer and professor at the Catholic University of Louvain and Stanford University, Eric Lambin conducts research on the interactions between human activity and the natural environment. In recent years, he has also been Chief Scientific Advisor to the European Commission. He is a member of several Academies of Science and has been awarded the Francqui 2009, Blue Planet 2019 and Volvo Environment 2014 prizes. He was recently awarded an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) on the territorial implications of the energy transition. His publications include Une Ecologie du Bonheur and Le Consommateur Planétaire, both published by Editions Le Pommier.
In his talk, he will pose the question: How can humanity continue to develop while respecting planetary boundaries? While the solutions for a transition to a sustainable society are well known, few of them are being implemented on a scale large enough to bring about a profound transformation of socio-economic systems. This paper will first introduce the concept of planetary frontiers. It will then examine how systemic change has been conceptualized by various scientific disciplines. Finally, it will present some theories of change for a transition to a sustainable society, drawing five lessons for achieving this transition.
The Laboratoire des Transitions is a new Centre d'Appui à la Recherche et à l'Enseignement (CARE) designed to promote collaborations between all scientific disciplines within the University of Liège and to amplify interactions with civil society in order to mark out trajectories towards just transitions and a society in tune with planetary limits.
