Faced with the environmental and social challenges we face, ULiège is launching a free MOOC to help everyone understand the challenges of transition.

This online course, initially designed for ULiège bachelor students of all disciplines, is now available to the general public: committed citizens or those simply interested in the topic, professionals undergoing retraining, etc

An interdisciplinary approach

The Sustainability & Transition MOOC offers a global understandingof current issues, using a cross-disciplinary, popularized approach that is accessible to all. This 6-hour online course is made up of a series of ten-minute video capsules, punctuated by short assessments to help you assimilate the material. It is organized around three interconnected modules:

  1. Environmental and social findings - Journey to the heart of how the Earth system works (climate, biodiversity, soil, oceans...) and the human system (inequalities, health, economy, governance...).
  2. Systemic causes - Why have we come to this? The MOOC deciphers the root causes of current upheavals (human-nature relationship, dominant narratives, economic model, consumption, urbanization, governance). Particular emphasis is placed on the food system, at the crossroads of many issues.
  3. Possible solutions - What transitions are possible? The course introduces the notions of sustainability and transition, identifies the major players, international dynamics (ODD, COP, IPCC...) and technical and social levers for action.

The aim is to provide the foundations for understanding the transformations underway - and those yet to be built.

Collective construction

This MOOC is the result of a rigorous, collaborative project involving :

  • some fifty experts from all ULiège faculties,
  • scientific contributors from civil society, who bring a perspective rooted in the realities of the field,
  • a coordination team dedicated to the course, ensuring its coherence.
  • a team from the ULiège Digital Care

ULiège has established partnerships to broaden the scope of the Sustainability & Transition online course:

  • The CRM (Centre de Recherche Métallurgique) is raising its employees' awareness of sustainability through this online course.
  • A partnership with RTBF has already enabled 50 journalists to take the course. In return, RTBF supports ULiège in improving the discourse of its experts and ensures their media exposure, particularly women, who are less visible on the airwaves.
