Guy Van Waas
Fundamentally driven by the search for Baroque and Classical authenticity, Guy Van Waas is a Belgian musician whose numerous titles and collaborations pay tribute to his versatility. Conductor of the Mozarteum in Salzburg and Concerto Köln, organist of the Grand Orgue des Carmes in Brussels, professor of chamber music at the Royal Conservatory of Mons, principal clarinetist with the La Monnaie Orchestra and then the Belgian Radio Symphony Orchestra, a performer with perfect mastery of the early clarinet... and, since 2001, principal conductor of the Les Agrémens orchestra, Guy Van Waas has enjoyed a passionate musical career spanning nearly fifty years, punctuated by numerous concerts and recordings in Belgium and throughout Europe. An artist who is eminently empathetic with his audience, with whom he enjoys interacting and meeting, Guy Van Waas generates enthusiasm at each of his stage appearances.
The CIMI has collaborated with Guy Van Waas on several occasions, both for a concert in Liège and for two summer tours, in 2024 in the Qyeras and in 2025 in the Vosges.
Pierre Fontenelle
Pierre Fontenelle is a young Belgian-American cellist pursuing a career as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral musician both in Belgium and internationally. Winner of the 2022 Breughel Competition (1st Prize, Audience Prize, Best Interpretation Prize), Buchet 2020 (2nd Prize "Van Hecke") and Edmond Baert 2019 (1st Prize and Feldbusch Prize), Pierre was also principal cellist of the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège until 2022. Since then, he has performed as a soloist in prestigious venues in Belgium and internationally, such as Flagey, the Queen Elisabeth Chapel, La Seine Musicale, the Taipei National Concert Hall, and the Shanghai Oriental Art Center. He has also been invited to perform as a soloist with renowned ensembles, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Liège, the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra, Musiques Nouvelles, Casco Phil, the Royal Music of the Guides, and the Grand Ducal Military Music.
For his contribution to Belgian music, he received the 2024 FUGA Trophy from the Union of Belgian Composers. The 2024-25 season will mark the release of his solo album Roots (spring 2025), a series of concerto concerts (Schumann, Haydn, Tchaikovsky, Gulda), and the premieres of concertos by Belgian composer Apolline Jesupret and French composer Jean-François Jung. He will also be artist-in-residence at the Abbaye de Royaumont alongside pianist Ninon Hannecart-Ségal.
Pierre works with renowned artists such as Florian Noack, Gaëlle Solal, Jodie Devos, and Gwendoline Blondeel. Outside of the classical repertoire, he explores innovative formats and contemporary popular music with his Duo Kiasma alongside accordionist Frin Wolter (1st Prize - Accordé'Opale Competition). Following a first album, American Album (works by Copland and Adams) with Oxalys in April 2024 on Passacaille Records, Roots pays tribute to contemporary American music, echoing his own origins.
The CIMI already collaborated with Pierre Fontenelle in 2018, honoring the Belgian composer Servais.
The CIMI - ULiège String Orchestra
CIMI's primary mission is to enable students in Liège to continue actively practicing music during their studies, but it also welcomes members of the university community and any skilled instrumentalists. It currently has around thirty instrumentalists, most of whom are high-level amateurs, as well as a few professional musicians.
The CIMI gives between 5 and 10 concerts a year. In addition to its traditional spring concert at the Salle académique of the University of Liège, it performs mainly in the Liège region, but also in Belgium and abroad. Last summer, a new tour took place in the Vosges, conducted by Guy Van Waas.
