The University of Liège is introducing its own fee structure to cover part or even all of the tuition fees for students in precarious circumstances

With the start of the 2026–2027 academic year approaching, which will see the implementation of new tuition fees across the entire higher education system, the University of Liège is expanding its financial aid program. Like other universities in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation that have the option to do so, ULiège is introducing a preferential tuition rate. This rate can also be significantly reduced - down to zero euros depending on individual circumstances - thanks to the financial aid offered by the Student Social Services Office. The goal is clear: to prevent any student from having to give up their studies for financial reasons.

tarting this year, tuition fees are divided into four categories defined by the Directorate of Student Financial Aid (DAE) of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation (FWB): the scholarship rate (€0), the low rate (€374), the intermediate rate (€835), and the full rate, now set at €1,194 (up from €835 previously). In addition to these four categories, ULiège offers a fifth option with its preferential rate, accompanied by additional financial aid that can substantially reduce this amount.

Like other universities in the FWB, ULiège has thus chosen to apply a rate lower than the full rate to students who demonstrate a need. The University will grant this preferential rate based on additional evaluation criteria, which may be broader than those of the DAE or simply updated to reflect the student’s situation at the time of application.

This “ULiège rate,” however, is only a first step: thanks to its social budget, the University can go further and cover an additional portion of the tuition fee, or even, in some cases, the entire amount. Each applicant will receive step-by-step support from the Student Social Services Office.

Students wishing to receive any form of assistance offered by ULiège’s services must first and foremost submit an initial application to the DAE. 

Four Proposed Measures for Assistance

1. An online form to access ULiège’s preferential rate
   A quick and easy process allows students to verify whether they meet the criteria for this preferential rate. The application, which must be submitted via an online format, can only be filed after receiving a response from the DAE confirming that the full tuition rate (€1,194)has been assigned.
2. An application for financial aid to reduce tuition fees
   Students who meet the criteria for the “ULiège rate,” as well as those to whom the DAE has assigned the intermediate rate (€835) or the modest rate (€374), may, if they are still experiencing financial difficulties, submit a complete application to the Student Social Services Office. A thorough analysis of their socioeconomic situation will allow for the granting of additional financial aid that can further reduce their tuition fees. Starting with the 2026–2027 academic year, this process will be handled through a new online platform, designed to streamline administrative procedures and allow access to one’s complete file with a single click.
3. An interest-free loan to spread out payments
   For any student required to pay a modest, intermediate, preferential, or full tuition rate, the Student Social Services Office offers an interest-free loan, repayable in several monthly installments over the course of the academic year. This application, which must be renewed annually, must be submitted by January 15, 2027, for the 2026–2027 academic year.
4. Additional Financial Aid
   In addition to tuition fees, students can apply for other forms of support throughout the year: a €12 annual bus/tram (TEC) pass, assistance for students unable to work part-time during exam periods, assistance with the purchase of course materials, food assistance, and more. Some of these financial assistance programs are automatically granted to students who meet the criteria, while others are awarded on a case-by-case basis after an assessment of the student’s socioeconomic situation.
