As a public university open to the world and is anchored in the scientific, cultural and economic development of its region, the University of Liège relies on its three pillars: teaching, research and civic engagement.
ULiège trains responsible citizens who are provided with cutting-edge knowledge and critical thinking, are able to share knowledge and can push forward an increasingly complex world.
ULiège develops and promotes excellence in research, multidisciplinary and direct engagement with its instruction.
Global exposure is a top priority at the University of Liège. The institution offers a wide range of international mobility opportunities to students, researchers and staff, enabling them to enhance their cross-disciplinary skills and language knowledge.
ULiège: an experience of daily living. Located in 3 cities and 4 campuses, the university is a key player in terms of the environment and mobility.
Modernity has an unwritten constitution. It is grounded in the tacit relationship between science and technology and the law. The preamble to this constitution starts with the proposition that science and politics occupy separate spheres because whatever the one is the other is not. From this follow claims of scientific autonomy and self-governance, and even a right, on the part of a sovereign science, to decree the directions of human progress. Central to this discourse is idea of the “law lag,” a phrase that conveys a very particular sense of the hierarchical relationship between science and law with respect to human lives and futures. This talk will question this implicit allocation of responsibilities between law and science. It will challenge the notion of progress that places scientific discovery always ahead of norms-making, and thereby cordons off the domain of inquiry as if it can move ahead without interference from the domain of values.
Son prochain livre, Can Science Make Sense of Life?, paraitra chez Polity Press en 2019.
