Esther Duflo, Nobel Prize in Economics, Honorary Doctorate from ULiège
Esther Duflo, winner of the Nobel Prize for Economics and committed to the fight against poverty, was awarded an honorary doctorate by ULiège. She met many students and members of the general public.
"Useful economics for warmer times" was the theme of Esther Duflo's keynote lecture on March 18 at the University of Liège, inviting deep reflection on the question of the financial responsibility of rich countries towards the poorest part of the planet.
Challenges and solutions
Nobel Prize in Economics (2019), Professor in the Department of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), co-founder and co-director of the laboratory for action against poverty (J-PAL), Esther Duflo has painted an uncompromising picture of today's challenges. However, the Franco-American economist remains convinced that behavior can change. She advocates the emergence of binding financing mechanisms to ensure that rich countries assume their financial responsibility towards the poorest part of the planet.
As a prelude to the conference, Esther Duflo received the insignia of Honorary Doctor of the ULiège from Rector Anne-Sophie Nyssen. The institution had in fact awarded her this title in September 2023, at its Rentrée académique event devoted to the links between Art and Science.
