Two new projects involving teams from the University of Liège have been approved as part of the 5th call for proposals under the Interreg VI Meuse-Rhine program: SCOPE, dedicated to developing more sustainable IT infrastructure, and ShuttleToBrain, which explores new approaches to improving the delivery of drugs to the brain.
The Interreg Meuse-Rhine program (IMR) , co-funded by the European Union and Wallonia, aims to strengthen cross-border cooperation between the border regions of Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands. More specifically, it covers five regions: the Provinces of Limburg in Belgium and the Netherlands, the Province of Liège (BE), North Rhine-Westphalia (DE), and Rhineland-Palatinate (DE). For the 2021–2027 period, a budget of 176 million euros has been allocated to cross-border projects, of which 125 million euros is funded by the European Union. This program addresses five major societal challenges: industrial transition, green transformation, health, tourism, and cooperation.
SCOPE: Toward More Sustainable High-Performance Computing

The SCOPE (Sustainable Computing Prototype for the Einstein Telescope) project aims to develop and validate an innovative computing center concept in which the availability of renewable energy, storage technologies, and computational workloads are dynamically co-optimized. The project is specifically designed to address the future computing needs of the Einstein Telescope and aims to help reduce its environmental footprint.

ShuttleToBrain: Facilitating the Delivery of Drugs to the Brain

ShuttleToBrain is developing an innovative exosome-based approach to facilitate the passage of drugs through the blood-brain barrier and their delivery to the brain, with the goal of supporting the development of new therapeutic strategies for neurological diseases. The University of Liège will contribute, in particular, to studies on the activity and toxicity of modified exosomes, which are essential for the continued development of this technology.
