To open the Teaching Week it is organising, the University of Liège has the honour of welcoming Patrick Aebischer, President of the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, Professor of Neurosciences and Director of the Neurodegeneration Laboratory at the EPFL’s Brain Mind Institute.
He will present a conference (in French) entitled: "Importance for Europe to have world-class research universities?".
Europe has an overall good tertiary education system but lacks world-class research universities according to the various University rankings.
Recently, several European countries have realized the importance of developing research intense universities that are at the heart of the innovation process. Disruptive discoveries very often take place at these institutions - there would be no Silicon Valley without Stanford and Berkeley, nor Route 128 without Harvard or MIT. The lack of world-class research universities constitutes one of the reasons explaining the lack of European competitiveness in fast developing fields such as information technology and biotechnology.
The creation of world-class universities requires a significant adaptation of the university governance including :
These reforms have allowed EPFL to be considered today as a world-class university at least according to various university rankings.
As a lead-in to this conference, Patrick Aebischer will receive the rank of Doctor honoris causa.
