Jane Goodall: discoveries, commitments, transmissions
Jane Goodall, a pioneer of primatology, passed away on October 1, 2025, at the age of 91. Her work revolutionized the field by documenting the use - and even the making - of tools by chimpanzees, bringing humans even closer to the rest of the living world. Awarded an honorary doctorate by our university in 2009, Jane Goodall received the insignia from Rector Bernard Rentier.
J
ane Goodall, who died on October 1, 2025, at the age of 91, opened a new dimension in primatology by documenting, among other things, the use—and even the making—of tools by chimpanzees, further narrowing the gap we perceived between humans and other animals. By integrating cognition, animal culture, conservation, and ethics, her work continues to inform scientific research around the globe. Beyond her scientific discoveries, Jane Goodall carried her message onto the international stage. A UN Messenger of Peace since 2002, she founded the Jane Goodall Institute in 1977 and launched the Roots & Shoots youth program, now active worldwide. These initiatives in education, conservation, and civic engagement tangibly extend her legacy and continue to inspire generations of students and researchers across the world.
In March 2009, Jane Goodall accepted the invitation of the University of Liège to deliver a public lecture, after which she received the insignia of Doctor honoris causa.
“Jane Goodall laid the foundations of a modern primatology by bringing to light distinctive behaviors—such as the use and making of tools—dispelling simplistic views of chimpanzees. In 2009, we had the honor of recognizing her at the University of Liège. Her true legacy lies in the paths she opened: lasting initiatives and a community of researchers who, every day, carry her vision forward and translate it into knowledge and concrete action.”
