The American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) will present its most prestigious awards to 11 outstanding individuals at the NASCC 2023: The Steel Conference in April 2023, including Thomas Gernay, currently an Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins University, ME Civil Engineer and PhD in Engineering Science from the University of Liège.
The AISC Lifetime Achievement Awards recognise individuals for particularly outstanding contributions to the structural steel industry.
Thomas Gernay's research focuses on the development of design and risk assessment methods to improve the resilience of structures subjected to fire.
His research aims to gain insight into the response of steel materials and structures to elevated temperatures, to develop new methods for the design of structures under fire, and to develop software to simulate the behaviour of steel structures under fire.
Thomas Gernay founded and manages the Multi-Hazard Resilient Structures Research Group at Johns Hopkins University. He is the co-author of SAFIR®, an innovative software package used by more than 250 institutions, engineers and researchers worldwide to accurately model and predict the response of a structure to fire.
His laboratory also studies the impact of damage to critical infrastructure, which can disrupt a city's ability to function, and develops methods to minimise damage.
Thomas Gernay is Associate Editor of Fire Technology, the peer-reviewed journal of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Society of Fire Protection Engineering (SFPE). He conducted research at CEA in Paris, and was a project engineer for Cockerill Maintenance & Engineering (now John Cockerill). He did his post-doctoral research at Princeton University as a Fulbright Fellow.
