BEHAVES: survey on well-being, harassment and discrimination in higher education
On the initiative of the Minister Valérie Glatigny (Higher Education and Scientific Research), the BEHAVES study (Bien-Être, Harcèlement et Violences dans l'Enseignement Supérieur) was launched on 15 February among students and staff of 41 higher education establishments (Universities, “Hautes Écoles”, “Écoles Supérieures des Arts”) in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.
In line with the measures already taken to make campuses safe for all, the study aims to better understand the frequency and nature of harassment, violence and discrimination in higher education institutions, as well as to evaluate the measures currently in place to prevent and deal with them.
It is being carried out through an online survey. Responses are voluntary, confidential and anonymous.
The BEHAVES study is being conducted by Pr Fabienne Glowacz Research Unit ARCH (Adaptation, Resilience, Change) of the University of Liège (ULiège).
The results, expected by the end of 2023, will enable the development of recommendations to strengthen strategies to prevent and combat harassment, discrimination and violence in higher education and to create a safe and healthy learning environment for students and all staff members of higher education institutions.

Valérie Glatigny, Minister for Higher Education:
"An education that is accessible to all requires a safe and fulfilling environment for students. Sexual harassment and violence have no place in this environment and must be fought by all actors. It is everyone's business! This study will allow us to assess the effectiveness of the many measures already in place, and to analyse whether and what additional measures could be taken to make everyone feel 100% safe in institutions and on campuses."
Professor Fabienne Glowacz (ULiège):
"The Behaves study is of major importance for the orientation of preventive policies in French-speaking Belgian higher education. In order to gain an in-depth understanding of the complexity of the phenomena of harassment, violence and discrimination, the Behaves study includes several stages of research based on quantitative and qualitative methodologies (online survey, focus groups with students, Delphi study with key players, etc.), in a dynamic and participatory manner), in a participatory and collaborative dynamic so that everyone can express themselves and participate. Make your voice heard, take part in the study! "
