This summer, the second telescope of the SPECULOOS project was successfully installed by Liege astronomers at the European Southern Observatory of Paranal, in the Atacama desert of Chile. Its name is Io, and it joins Europa, the first telescope of the project installed earlier this year. They will soon be joined by two other telescopes, Callisto and Ganymede. Together, these four telescopes will form the SPECULOOS Southern Observatory which will scout the sky from early 2018 for potentially habitable exoplanets similar to the ones of the famous TRAPPIST-1 star, revealed by Michaël Gillon and his team on february 2017. The SPECULOOS is a project led by ULiege and done in collaboration with several foreign institutions. For more information, please see here.
