Meeting of the UniGR Council at the University of Liège
The seven partners of the Université de la Grande Région met at the Château de Colonster (ULiege campus) to take stock of current collaborations and outline the future of the consortium.
As a public university open to the world and is anchored in the scientific, cultural and economic development of its region, the University of Liège relies on its three pillars: teaching, research and civic engagement.
ULiège trains responsible citizens who are provided with cutting-edge knowledge and critical thinking, are able to share knowledge and can push forward an increasingly complex world.
ULiège develops and promotes excellence in research, multidisciplinary and direct engagement with its instruction.
Global exposure is a top priority at the University of Liège. The institution offers a wide range of international mobility opportunities to students, researchers and staff, enabling them to enhance their cross-disciplinary skills and language knowledge.
ULiège: an experience of daily living. Located in 3 cities and 4 campuses, the university is a key player in terms of the environment and mobility.
The six universities of the Fédération Wallonie‐Bruxelles, represented within the Conseil des Recteurs francophones (Conference of rectors), are deeply shocked by the brutal response given by the Iranian authorities to students, teachers, and, more broadly, all Iranian women and men who have been protesting since the death of 22‐year‐old Mahsa Amini who died in custody after being arrested for allegedly flouting local dress codes.
The Conference of rectors strongly supports all the Iranian women and men who peacefully stand up for their rights and calls upon the Belgian and European authorities to urge the Iranian authorities to respect those rights, to engage in a constructive dialogue with the protesters and to grant universities the leeway they need so as to fully play their role as centers of critical thinking.
The six universities will organize initiatives to raise public awareness and will continue to do so until the violent actions against Iranian students, teachers and other citizens come to a halt and a constructive and multi‐voiced democratic dialogue is installed.

Between 2014 and 2019, many initiatives led by the group Liège Amnesty International and French-speaking universities had been taken to oppose the imprisonment of Hamid Babaei. The Iranian PhD researcher from HEC Liège had been unjustly imprisoned in his country following his refusal to spy on Iranian students living in Belgium. He was released 6 years later, in August 2019.
Hamid Babaei now wishes to raise awareness for the defense of human rights in Iran. A conference will be organized soon:
